Pom Pom's Childlike Christmas

Pom Pom says that this was their tree last year. It really got me thinking about trees for her Christmas blog party.

This time last year I was getting ready to fly off to Paris with Cooking Catherine to stand awed beneath this beauty in Galeries Lafayette. But actually, my clearest memory from my own childhood Christmases is of sitting under our tree with my brother. I was telling him Christmas stories; I may even have been telling him The Christmas Story, such a serious little thing was I!
What I most remember is the very real awe that the lights could be so beautiful, that such a varied range of decorations, from ancient and gleaming and spinning Santa to peacock in some authentic feeling down, could become festive characters in whatever tale you wanted to invent.

So my first ingredient for a childlike Christmas is any tree, with any lights, and an assorted range of hanging things, preferably with a story, real or imagined!

i agree that a tree with all the trimmings is a perfect ingredient. you have reminded me of the childhood trees we used to dress on my december birthday, how much i looked forward to that event and even now can remember all the sights, smells and sounds so clearly.

i look forward to your next child-like christmas post :)

A tree with lights is always so magical, isn't it? Wonderful trees pictured.

I am hoping for a snow day tomorrow, so I can decorate my tree. It was so red last year!
I love the last picture and I love that tree!

My little brother and I used to sit in front of our tree and tell stories to each other. It was lovely.

It seems so obvious now, that a childlike Christmas is what each of us remembers from when we were children. I am quite blessed at reading of other women's memories and they are prodding my own store of stored experiences in a way that must result in blog posts very soon!

I love the thought of serious you, telling your brother the Christmas story. And that would now be one of HIS Christmas memories.

I think when a tree enters the house that is when children really feel Christmas has arrived!

One thing I really miss now the girls are grown up and living away is having their company as we dressed the tree each year - talking about the significance of each ornament, sharing memories...
Please send me two small boys this weekend to help me!!

Advent blessings x

PS I still have a TALL boy of my own to put the angel on the top!!

My dad has ordered a tall Christmas tree to be delivered to his house the day before we arrive for the holidays! I am so excited to think of decorating it with him, Ben and the boys, using the decorations I remember from childhood and some of our own which I'll let the boys choose. Like you, some of those decorations (for me it was a clothespeg soldier and sailor) were real characters for me!

Sometimes I think I could keep my tree up all winter. I remember we had peacocks and other birds on our tree when I was young. I think my brother and I pet them to death :oS because they eventually disappeared.

Blessings!
