Make do and mend, Mother Hubbard

On the Monday before Christmas, when we were all together thanks to holidays and snow days, we got into the car with The Huge List and did The Big Shop. We did this in Ballyclare, local market town and big residential area, which would, we foolishly thought, have guaranteed fairly clear roads. No!

The Huge List was, however, most successful, and only tonight have I come to the end of freezer, fridge and cupboard supplies. Helped nicely by Nigel Slater. On the Monday after Christmas (I think) I watched his Simple Suppers' Festive edition- a week's meals from the weekend's left-overs. Maybe not quite so bowl you over with lifestyle as other celebrity chefs, but reassuringly accessible on ingredients and graciously humble on a nonetheless bowl you over with lifestyle kitchen garden. And I wept my way through Toast on i-player yesterday lunch-time.

Anyway, the recipe for Perky Turkey is super with turkey or the remains of a roast chicken. (Can you identify seven ingredients without checking the website??!!) And it lets me sneak late through the door, again, of another Alphabe-Thursday!

i saw Nigel Slater on t.v for the first time recently and liked his sweet gentle, unassuming manner.

ok. my guess would be turkey (yes, definitely turkey)....um olive oil and ...erm ?...chilli, yes and honey. oh and tomato puree or sauce and are they mustard seeds? and maybe some tamari.
wait, how many is that? 1..2..3.4....7! did i guess right?

being vegetarian, i would probably marinade quorn or veggies in something similar.

Sounds good - Nigel Slater wrote the 'celebrity endorsement' for a book my sister got me for Christmas: 'The New English Kitchen', and, having read Toast ages ago, it encouraged me that I'd like the book. Happy New Year to you all!

I used to go to the library to borrow Nigel Slater books when I was poor. They were very heavy. Carrying them home was a labour of love. Now I'm not so poor I've abandoned Nigel. The way of the world.

Back again - Keep me informed on your Wind in the Willows event, please! Would it be sacrelige to say that the books didn't appeal to me much as a child??? I like them now, though, as I've seen the boys enjoy them so much.

Well, I just sneaked through the door myself. Perky Turkey....garlic, chili powder, cayene, onions, rice....who knows...never heard of it but....I will go find out..teehee.

We watched Toast, and felt so sad. Poor Nigel. His programmes are inspiring, in such a quiet way.

I've read a few of Nigel Slater's recipes and I like that he can take left-overs and make them into something new and delish. My guess in the pan: mustard, honey, soy sauce, ketchup (or hot sauce). That's the kind of sauce I like!
